Acne Treatment Information

Medical News Today, UK
14 Apr 2007
If you are suffering from acne, you need to look at your lifestyle to see if you can lessen the problem before you start on an actual treatment for acne:
-- Drink at least 6 glasses of water per day.
-- Include plenty of leafy vegetables and fresh fruits in your diet.
-- Wash your face twice a day very gently with a mild soap such as Neutrogena in cool or lukewarm water (ensuring you remove any make up).
-- If you wear make up or sunscreen, make sure it is labeled "non-comedogenic" or "non-acnegenic". Make up should be water-based only.
-- If using hair sprays or gels, keep them well away from your face.
-- If you have long hair or a fringe, wash it frequently to keep oil away.
-- If you have a job where you might be in contact with oil (e.g. fast food restaurant or a gas station) or you exercise or play sport, then keep washing that face.
Many natural ingredients have been used over the centuries for the treatment of acne. Fruits and herbs like papaya, tomato, lemon, garlic, mint, cinnamon, nutmeg, fenugreek, turmeric, radish and sesame seeds help improve skin disorders and acne. The natural ingredients protect against pollutants, thereby preventing acne. They are also good at getting rid of toxins, relieving inflammation and stopping the growth of bacteria.

Cancer and cosmetics

MARGARET PHILP
Globe and Mail, Canada

Amy Robertson is about as natural as a Canadian can be.
Without a trace of makeup, her blond hair usually cinched in a ponytail, the former organic farmer and health-food store clerk from Vancouver scrupulously avoids preservatives and pesticides in her food. She was also tested last year by researchers collecting proof of toxic chemicals in the body.
But what she discovered shocked her -- her clean-living body was distressingly polluted with heavy metals and PCBs. If the 43-year-old is disciplined about what goes into her mouth, she is anything but when it comes to what she puts on her skin. Inspecting her herbal shampoo label for the first time, she finds cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine and methyl cocoyl taurate, the stuff of chemistry labs.
"I've always said to the kids, 'If you can't pronounce an ingredient, we won't buy it,' " Ms. Robertson says. "But I have obviously not been that good with cosmetics."

Few have. While Canadians have become savvy about chemicals in their food -- scanning package labels and paying premium prices for organic produce -- little mention has been made of the chemicals that clean our hair and moisturize our skin day in and day out.
Yet some of the 10,000 ingredients in beauty products are suspected or confirmed carcinogens, hormone-mimicking chemicals or substances linked to birth defects. And in an age of increasing fear over chemical exposures, the $5.3-billion cosmetics industry is poised to become the new frontier for health and eco-minded consumers.

Hair loss is a very common problem experienced by most people at various age groups. This is the reason why Combat Hair Loss advises and provides hair loss treatments. However, prior beginning your hair loss regimen it is wise to know its main cause.
Hair loss can be due to various reasons, it can be hereditary, it can be after the child birth, it can be due to wrong diet and many other reasons. In hair loss prevention there is an incorrect notion that hereditary hair loss is not preventable. This is wrong as by taking a few precautionary steps you can prevent hair loss. The best hair loss prevention is to catch it early and to understand it’s root causes and treat the cause relevant to your specific situation.
According to a few dermatologists, hair loss occurs due to improper care and over usage of colouring, styling or excessive blow drying your hair. These factors may contribute to your hair loss. Thus, don’t try to strive hard for infusing more style, as this can lead to hair loss.
Excessive styling generally damages the hair follicles and can become the main factor of hair loss for you. It has been seen that hair loss prevention is not too difficult if you keep a proper check and make it part of your daily routine. Most trusted hair loss prevention is to have a balanced diet along with plenty of water. And if it is accompanied with calcium and other sources of Vitamin A then it becomes the best hair loss prevention without the need for expensive treatments.
Apart from that using a good conditioner every time you shampoo also prevent hair from certain damage. Don’t forget to consult the expert dermatologist for knowing the best hair loss prevention as he is the one who can provide you with the expert advice.

Laser useful for severe facial acne

Reuters Health
Reuters.uk
New York: Laser treatment can reduce inflammatory facial acne lesions with few side effects, new research shows. Moreover, it appears to work even with the darkest skin types.
The findings, which appear in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, are based on a study of 22 patients, with light to dark skin types, who underwent three treatments with the laser -- specifically a1450-nanometer diode laser -- at 3 to 4 week intervals.
The subjects received treatment at high or low doses on the left or the right side of the face, the report indicates.
After three treatments, average acne lesion counts were reduced by about 75% and 70% with the low and high dose treatment, respectively, Dr. Ming H. Jih, from the University of Texas School of Medicine in Houston, and colleagues report. These reductions basically persisted at a 12-month follow-up examination.

What Can You Do If You're Going Bald?

ROB INDERRIEDEN
WMDT, MD
For some it begins in their late teens. For others it starts much later, but research shows that by age 50, nearly half of all men will suffer at some level from male pattern baldness.
"You can lose 50 percent of your hair before it becomes cosmetically obvious to other people. So my advice is as soon as you know you're losing hair and if it bothers you, you should start treating it," said Dr. Kenneth Washenik.
But the question for many is, what do I do? What can be done? And where do I even begin?
The first step is a no-brainer.
"The first thing you have to do if you're suffering from hair loss is go and see a physician who's knowledgeable in treating hair loss and understands the cause of it," Dr. Washenik said.
Health officials say men talk to doctors about any number of concerns and hair loss should be included, especially since a doctor can help determine the cause of the hair loss and outline some of the options available.

Some food, especially dairy, can worsen acne

Anahad O'Connor
New York Times
Arizona Republic, US
The claim: Your diet can bring on acne.
The facts: Despite what parents everywhere have long insisted, most people know by now that chocolate and greasy foods will not cause acne. But can other foods?
According to dermatologists, what largely determines whether a person develops acne are genetics and hormonal fluctuations, hence the tendency for it to occur during puberty, pregnancy and menopause.
But recent studies have pointed to one or two exceptions, most notably dairy products. One of the largest studies to demonstrate this was published last year in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology by a team at Harvard.
The researchers analyzed the habits and diets of nearly 50,000 people, looking especially at what they ate while in high school. Those who drank three or more cups of milk a day, the study found, were 22 percent more likely to experience severe acne compared with those who drank one serving a week or less.

Men turn to transplants or plugs for thinning manes

Bernadette Sedillos Self
El Paso Times, US
While there is still mystery surrounding some aspects of hair loss, researchers know that the loss in men occurs largely because of genetics and male hormones.
Parts of the scalp are sensitive to hormones, which can make the hair follicles shrink, said Dr. Marino A. Rios medical director of the Cosmetic & Hair Surgery Institute, 1714 N. Mesa.
Drugs such as Rogaine and Propecia have been around a while and can help diminish hair loss. But as cosmetic procedures improve with advancements in technology, many people with thinning hair are interested in hair transplants.
If you're thinking about hair "plugs" or large patches that are "quilted" onto the top of the head, think again, Rios said.
Rios, who is a hair-transplant recipient himself, pointed out that people who are interested in hair transplants must have a realistic expectation.

Children With Eczema Have The Same Impaired Quality Of Life As Those With Kidney Disease

Dermatology News
Medical News Today
Children with serious skin conditions feel their quality of life is impaired to the same extent as those with chronic illnesses such as epilepsy, kidney disease and diabetes, according to research published in the July issue of British Journal of Dermatology.
A team of Scottish researchers surveyed 379 five to 16 year-olds, who had been suffering from skin diseases like acne, eczema and psoriasis for more than six months, together with their parents.
They asked the children and their parents how much the condition impaired the child's quality of life when it came to factors such as pain, loss of sleep, dietary restrictions, interference with school and play, friendships, teasing and bullying and medical treatment.
They then compared the quality of life scores given by the parents of 161 children with chronic diseases in the same age group.

Sleep, skin-care potions go together

Belleville News-Democrat
Beauty sleep has a whole new definition these days with a lineup of lotions and potions specially designed to work wonders while you snooze.
It's a category of skin-care products that's growing as women opt for even more ways to repair and rejuvenate stressed skin.
"The reasoning for a nighttime product is that they go on clean skin without interference from makeup, daily grime or perspiration, so the active ingredients are working better," explains Dr. Richard G. Glogau, a clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California-San Francisco and an expert in cosmetic dermatology.
Without the environmental distractions and with your cells' natural ability to renew during the night, the right treatment can help make your complexion look fresher and brighter, he adds.

Beauty's beasts

ANNA SMYTH
Scotsman, United Kingdom
The rich soapy lather which gives us that squeaky-clean feeling when washing our hair is usually produced by sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), used in many foaming bathroom products. For some it can cause irritation, scalp rash and allergic reactions.
Flowers insists that though in large quantities the chemicals in shampoo can be irritants, in approved cosmetics there is no health risk.
"There are rumours that SLS is carcinogenic, but no scientific studies have shown a link between shampoo and cancer. At a high concentration, if SLS were not washed off the skin, it would certainly irritate the skin but the cosmetics industry would never use it in those quantities, or in that form."
If you use an anti-dandruff shampoo, you should also look out for the antifungal chemical zinc pyrithione, which aims to tackle the root cause of skin flakes.
Although considered safe for external use, avoid swallowing it as it can have serious health implications. Lab tests on rats found that ingested zinc pyrithione caused progressive hind-limb weakness, muscle wastage and penile prolapse.

Going bald? Blame it on your dad...

Dr. Akshay Batra
Afternoon Dispatch & Courier
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, two out of three men in America develop some form of balding, while around 30-50% males in the age group of 30-50 years anywhere in the world are affected by it.
Balding happens to 40 % people in their 40’s and increases with age. Generally 81% of balding men have been known to have a balding father... the one thing, along with all the good things, your father gives you.So, what causes hair loss in men? Some men never go "bald", however everyone experiences thinning of hair over the years. Despite much research, there’s still only a little that men can do to slow down or reverse hair loss.
This is in reference male-pattern baldness (MPB). The medical term for MPB is androgenetic alopecia which means hair loss that you get when you have male hormones and a hereditary tendency to lose hair.
Symptoms of Male Pattern BaldnessThe hairline begins to recede, eventually forming an "M" shape at the front of the head. There will be a larger than normal accumulation of hair in the shower drain after each shower.Hair comes out with the comb or brush during normal grooming. The hair on the crown of the head will begin to thin out, forming a bald spot that eventually expands.

While many skin care products purport to repair damage and provide added protection against environmental toxins, harsh chemicals in many of these products can lead to dull, slackened skin and an increased susceptibility to aging.
A holistic program that includes simple home remedies, botanical products and vitamin supplements can effectively treat acne, dry skin, eczema and other common skin problems - as well as repair damage and increase skin elasticity, experts say.So, we asked medical experts what they use to keep their skin healthy. Read on for their recommendations."Nettle tea and aloe vera juice are great for soothing acne inflammations and speeding up the healing process," Claudia Raines, M.D., a licensed dermatologist and aesthetician in San Francisco said. Acne Drug Restrictions Fuel Debate

The FDA is pushing ahead with plans to launch the program, known as iPledge, on March 1, despite protests from dermatologists complaining that it is overly burdensome and won't succeed in preventing exposures. The drug has been sold in the U.S. since 1982 and is intended for patients with severe, scarring acne that does not respond to other treatments.Isotretinoin has been shown effective against severe acne. But the drug can also cause severe birth defects, mental retardation, premature birth, and spontaneous abortions in the fetuses of women who take it while pregnant.

New treatments subsidised for acne, pain

PHARMAC
Scoop.co.nz,
New Zealand
A new anti-acne cream is one of two new skin creams to be fully subsidised from 1 March.
Hydrogen peroxide cream (Crystacide) is an anti-infective skin cream that provides an alternative to the antibiotic-containing skin creams that are used to treat acne. PHARMAC Chief Executive Wayne McNee says the listing of hydrogen peroxide cream follows a high priority recommendation from the anti-acne sub-committee of PTAC (the Pharmacology and Therapeutics Advisory Committee).
"There is a risk that the use of topical antibiotics such as fusidic acid and mupirocin can lead to bacterial resistance, and this can limit the effectiveness of antibiotics," Wayne McNee says."So it is pleasing to be able to subsidise hydrogen peroxide cream as it will enable a reduction in the use of the antibiotic creams."

Chemo Treatment Without Hair Loss?

WDIV, MI
Researchers have discovered a medical breakthrough that may allow patients to fight cancer without losing their hair.
Dr. Jeffrey Margolis, a Beaumont oncologist, introduced a patient to the Cold Cap. The cap is like an ice pack that, when applied to the head, reduces the amount of hair a patient loses during chemotherapy, Local 4 reported.
"Chemotherapy kills rapidly dividing cells," said Margolis. "What the cold cap does is it constricts the blood vessels going through to the hair and basically prevents the hair follicles from being exposed from the toxins of the chemotherapy."
The cap is applied before, during and after chemo treatment. The cap is painfully cold and should be replaced every 35 minutes to keep the temperature consistent, according to patients.

Want to Prevent Hair Loss? Wash It

Jin-Han Lee, Donga
South Korea
When men in their 40s see their hair beginning to fall out, it usually means their hair is just getting thinner. But it may also be a sign of disease. “Hair loss happens when one’s hair thins out due to age. But if that is not the case, people suffering from hair loss need to check to see if they have other diseases, such as inflammatory diseases, thyroid diseases, lupus (an auto-immune disease), diabetes, or tuberculosis,” according to hair expert Professor Kang Jin-soo of the Kang-Han Dermatology Clinic.
To Prevent Hair Loss, Change Your Lifestyle- Most hair loss usually comes from bad lifestyle habits. Dandruff, excessive scalp fat, and germs on the scalp often lead to hair loss. To prevent it, it is necessary to eliminate these factors because they block human hair follicles. In order to get rid of the scalp secretions and scalp fat that provides conditions for hair loss, one should wash his or her hair once a day.
Those who have excessively oily scalps need to wash the hair twice a day. Soap is better than shampoo for washing hair. For those who suffer from hair loss resulting from oily scalp, shampoos for oily skin and hair are recommended.

Henna

Rachel Petkewich
Chemical & Engineering News
I first met Ruby Bansal at school when we were nine years old. Through high school chemistry, college life, and budding science careers in different parts of the U.S., we kept in close contact.
In September, I attended her wedding. In accordance with her family's Indian tradition, Ruby's hands were adorned with mehendi-designs drawn on the body using henna.
The night before the wedding, Deepal Vora, a Boston-based henna artist born in Mumbai, India, decorated Ruby and also her sister Neeta and me.
As Vora expertly put tiny swirls and dots of the green-brown henna paste on my hands, I felt a cooling sensation and noticed a smell like that of fresh-cut grass and spinach. As a rule of thumb, the longer the henna stays on the skin, the longer and darker the stain will be. So to keep the paste from flaking off too quickly, Vora swabbed the patterns with a mixture of lemon juice and sugar. Henna paste is prepared from the green leaves of Lawsonia inermis, a small tree that grows in warm, arid regions of the world such as India, Pakistan, and Northern Africa. Numerous artifacts found in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean countries, dating back to 1400 B.C., show women with henna patterns on their hands.
The earliest writing on an artifact that refers to the specific use of henna as an adornment for a bride or a woman's special occasion is an inscription on a tablet from about 2100 B.C. found in northwest Syria, says Catherine Cartwright-Jones, a Kent State University Ph.D. student who is carrying out research on the culture and geography of henna.

Dr. Hall and Infini Cosmetic Associates now offers their new oxygen therapy as a recovery treatment that promotes healing following laser skin treatments or acne treatments. Oxygen therapy accelerates the development of new skin cells, improves the supply of oxygen to skin cells, and provide conditions to enhance collagen formation. For over 10 years, oxygen has been used in the aesthetic industry.
Oxygen is necessary for the health and well being of every cell in our body. Since skin is the largest organ of the body, skin cells are no exception. It has been scientifically proven that oxygen deficiency is one of the common denominators of skin aging. When skin becomes damaged by overexposure to the environment, treatments such as chemical peels,
microdermabrasion, photofacials, Fraxel laser treatments, and erbium laser resurfacing can reduce the signs of aging. Utilizing oxygen after any of these treatments accelerates the healing process.
